We would like to make you aware of a change in scheduling for 3rd – 8th grades in the 2014-15 school year.  This is something we have researched during this school year and we think will be beneficial to the education of our students; departmentalization.

Departmentalization is closely related to looping at the elementary age.  Departmentalization or platooning is nothing new; it is what students have done in middle school and high school for years. Many elementary schools across the United States (including Missouri) and Asia have been teaching in a departmentalization or platooning style for years.

We are blessed at Swedeborg to have teachers who are strong in multiple content areas; however, in departmentalization each teacher teaches in her strength, specialty and passion!  This means Mrs. Adreanne Black will be teaching Mathematics, Mrs. Kristi Cargill will be teaching English Language Arts, and Mrs. Sara Verscha will be teaching Science and Social Studies.

The Common Core State Standards or Missouri Learning Standards require new kinds of skills from students, we at Swedeborg are expanding the model by asking teachers to drop their traditional roles as generalists and serve instead as experts in one or two content areas. We are beginning departmentalization in grades 3-8.

Below are a couple of websites to begin your research on departmentalization or platooning:
